About Joel
From lawyer to operator to founder to coach.
I have spent much of my career stepping into work I had not originally imagined. That history shapes how I work with people who are growing into greater responsibility—or questioning the path that brought them here.

The career arc
Law · Technology · Operations · Entrepreneurship · Coaching
I began my career as a litigator at Gibson Dunn, a leading international law firm, then moved in-house at a series of technology companies. Over time, my work expanded beyond law into operations, strategy, people leadership, sales and go-to-market, product, finance and general management.
At Autonomy, a publicly traded enterprise software company, I became COO and General Counsel for the Americas and helped lead the business through expansion and multiple acquisitions. By 2011, Autonomy had approximately 2,700 employees and was reporting an annualized revenue run rate above $1 billion. After HP acquired the company, I served as VP of Operations & Strategy and Chief of Staff for HP Software.
I later co-founded SV Academy, a mission-driven professional training and job-placement company focused on expanding access to high-growth careers for underrepresented and under-resourced job seekers. I served as COO through multiple stages of its development as we built the company from zero to approximately 100 employees and $10 million in annual revenue while serving thousands of learners.
Across those roles, I experienced both the highs of rapid growth, fundraising and acquisition and the lows of conflict, scrutiny and organizational crisis. That experience shapes how I coach. I understand the business problem, the human dynamics around it and how difficult it can be to act in line with your judgment and values when the pressure is high.
What this means for coaching
Clear-eyed, human and grounded in the real world.
I listen closely, say what I see and do not avoid what is difficult. I will help you slow the situation down, understand your part in it and decide what you want to do next.
Clients describe me as empathetic and candid. I bring a high bar for honesty and follow-through, without losing sight of the person carrying the role.
